How do you clean winter salt and deicer residue?
Manage entrances, remove grit and choose a floor-compatible method for winter deicing-salt marks.
Where to start
Start by limiting salt tracked through entrances and removing dry grains with a suitable tool. On flooring that permits washing, use a compatible cleaner dosed according to its label, then recover the solution. A white film does not identify the deposit: do not automatically choose an acid.
Reduce what enters the building
Maintain entrance mats and remove visible deposits before they travel farther. Separate wet and dry zones and secure walkways during cleaning.
Match the method to the flooring
Identify the floor, finish and care instructions. Remove loose grit and grains dry. On wood or laminate, follow the manufacturer’s moisture limit; an auto-scrubber is not a universal solution.
Avoid leaving washing residue
Dose cleaner according to its label and manuals. Change dirty solution and check the microfibre pad or squeegee. Rinse when the method requires it, recover water and inspect the dry surface before reopening.
What to compare
| Situation | Starting point | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Dry grains at the entrance | Dry pickup with a suitable tool. | Spreading debris with a dirty mop. |
| Marks on washable flooring | Test an approved cleaner and method. | Increasing dose without label instructions. |
| Persistent white film | Check the deposit, finish and previous steps. | Applying acid to an unidentified surface. |

Frequently asked questions
Does every white mark need an acid cleaner?
No. Appearance does not identify a deposit, and acid may be incompatible with the surface. Confirm the product based on flooring, finish and soil.
Can any vacuum pick up water?
No. Liquid pickup requires equipment designed for that task and configured according to its manual. Do not use this as a hazardous-material recovery method.
